DDB Foundation Launches Digital Entertainment Platform

Digital Direct Broadcast (DDB) Foundation has launched a new digital entertainment platform – Digital Direct Broadcast, which claims to offer a better television viewing experience by offering features like an integrated set-top box, 2D to 3D image conversion, Cloud Computing, Direct Satellite reception among others.

Digital Direct Broadcast (DDB) Foundation is a consortium of seven technology companies including the semiconductor company STMicroelectronics, application maker Irdeto, cloud computing focused Nivio, audio-video technology company Faroudja, Sound technology company Strata, DTH service provider Videocon d2h and electronics company Phillips.

There’s not much info on the types of devices which will support the platform, at this point in time. But we feel that the device will be an advanced version of a set-top box with support for 3D and internet based apps. We will not be surprised if it will be supported initially by Videocon on its DTH platform.

Features and Specs: As stated earlier, this new platform brings in new features like an Integrated set-top box which can directly receive satellite signals without the need of a separate set-top box; a 2D to 3D conversion technology which converts the regular 2D images in television channels to 3D images in supported televisions; Internet browsing with several television apps to access Facebook, Twitter, Google, Skype, Yahoo and others; a 450MHz dual core processor along with a 14 bit processor which is apparently capable of displaying 4 trillion colors; a Cloud TV service which allows users to share files, pictures or songs over the air; Over The Air (OTA) software updates; improved audio-visual experience, 10-band graphic equalizer, and HDMI support.

Availability: The consortium stated that the platform will be launched on July 1, to coincide with the upcoming mandatory digitization and will be available across four metro cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata. Although, there is no specific information on the pricing front at present.

Other Players: Last week, Amkette, the storage and multimedia technology company, had launched EvoTV which runs on Google’s Android 2.3.4 (Gingerbread) and allows customers to access Internet on their television using WiFi or a broadband connection. Sling Media also offers a TV streaming device, Slingbox, which allows users to hook-up a live TV source like an analog coaxial cable or a Cable or Satellite set top box to stream TV content via the Internet to a computer or other portable devices including iPads and smart phones.

In February 2012, Zee New Media, the digital business of Zee Entertainment Enterprises, had launched Ditto TV, an online TV subscription service that offered live TV streams and video on demand content on mobile phones, tablets, PCs, entertainment boxes and connected TVs. Available in India, UK, UAE, New Zealand and Australia, this service was powered by Siemens Communication and Media Technology and offered adaptive streaming that ensures an optimal live stream feed based on the available bandwidth strength. Prior to this, PK Online had also extended its Hello TV service to non-BSNL users, provided they subscribe to the service via a BSNL branded ITZ Cash card. Apalya’s TV platform has also been deployed by a large number of mobile operators and OEMs (Original equipment manufacturer) in India.
